Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, said that he imagined a better Nigeria where human rights will be respected after protests End of SARS.

Mohammed stated this on Monday in Abuja at a special forum NAN.

The Minister explained that the vision will be achieved if the protesters would end the protests, gives peace a chance and allow the government to implement unprecedented reforms that the nation’s security architecture.

Mohammed, who regrets that the peaceful protest with the original claim had been hijacked by thugs and those with selfish motives to destabilize the country, also described the End SARS as “one of the most popular and successful protest in the history of this country”,

According to him, the government has begun a process of unprecedented reform of the police and internal security structures following protests around the end of SARS.

“With every challenge, there is always a chance, and opportunity of this protest has given us is to look at a more holistic approach to reform our internal security.

“For the first time in the history of this country, a special police tactical unit is being formed which will be supervised not by the Police Command but the committee to be chaired by the governor of each state with youth representatives and civil society organizations.

“The Committee is chaired by the Governor will have responsibility for overseeing how special security units associated with the public and carry out their responsibilities.

“The panel being installed will take complaints from the public relating to human rights violations; This has never happened in the history of this country, ” he said.

Mohammed said that after EndSARS protests, the government has never before been directed to establish a judicial panel of inquiry in every state to investigate and prosecute innocent security officers involved in the brutality and unlawful killings.

He said that it was also the first time that the government is setting up a Victim Support Fund to compensate victims of police brutality and unlawful killings in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“In line with the new Police Act, the officer must be registered in the new tactical police unit will be tested psychologically and mentally to ensure that they are fit for surgery.

“It will put a big check on police abuse and unlawful killings that we’ve seen for decades, ” he said.
